| Origin: Granted in 1735 as a home to Gorham's returning soldiers who served under Capt. John Gorham in the Canada Expedition, the town was granted a second time in 1748 as Starkstown. Those settlers were led by Archibald Stark, father of General John Stark, a hero of the battles of Bunker Hill and Bennington. The town was once again granted in 1752, this time as Dunbarton, before being incorporated in 1765.
