Granted in 1735 as a home to Gorham's returning soldiers who served under Capt. John Gorham in the Canada Expedition, the town was granted a second time in 1748 as Starkstown. Those settlers were led by Archibald Stark, father of General John Stark, a hero of the battles of Bunker Hill and Bennington. The town was once again granted in 1752, this time as Dunbarton, before being incorporated in 1765. The town is named after Dumbartonshire, Scotland.
